Bringing The Island to the People
Owner Mabel “Tyce” Reid is a Jamaican native. She got the nickname “Tyce” from her grandfather a WWI veteran who owned the local store in her home town. The nickname is short for “enticing” because he spoiled her and couldn’t deny her anything. The nickname stuck throughout her life.

Her family thought education was very important so just before age 7, she left her mountain village to find a school in Kingston. To stay in the city, she needed to board with a local family. To pay for room and board, she became their cook, making food for 7 people in the family on a daily basis.
In 1973, a year after desegregation busing and the riots that followed, Tyce moved to Boston with her parents and siblings. A year and a half of high school, she attended Pine Manor Women’s college (now Messina College) at 15. After earning her associate’s degree there, Tyce went to North Eastern University and became their number one Women’s Tennis player while earning a BA in education.
Although she thought she’d go into physical education she ended up in High School administration. During her time as an administrator, Tyce helped to save Dorchester’s Jeremiah Burke High School, a majority minority institution that had lost it’s accreditation. Tyce and her team were able to get big companies like Apple, Oracle & IBM to invest in the school and make it a high-tech learning institution. It’s now called Dr. Albert D. Holland School of technology. For her work with the high School, she was given an award from the Massachusetts senator John Kerry.
Tyce also worked for METCO (Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity) for 20 years as a program director. The program helps Boston kids of color get an education in predominantly white school districts.
Ready to start a new chapter Tyce moved to Maine in XXXX after visiting her brother Bigga. She asked if they had any good Jamaican food and Bigga laughed. Tyce decided to open her own Jamaican restaurant and Go See Tyce BBQ opened on Route 1 in Scarborough in August of 2021.
